Empowering Our Community Through Legal Education

Through workshops, court accompaniment, and campus events, we connect students and community members to help them better understand the law
and stand up for their rights.

Community
Services

Legal Information is a free, bilingual service for McGill University students and members of the Montreal community. The LICM is the largest student-run bilingual legal information clinic in Canada !

Approximately 80 volunteers and 5 directors work at the Clinic to provide legal information over the phone. Please fill out the intake form below, and a caseworker will call you in 2-3 business days to take on your case.

To reach a student advocate please e-mail info.studentadvocacy@licm.ca.

Beyond legal information, the LICM offers several services to groups on campus and in the community

The LICM facilitates Just Info presentations, legal workshops on a specific area of law, to student clubs and community organizations. The content of the workshops is tailored to your group’s specific needs.

The LICM offers free court accompaniment to the Administrative Housing Tribunal and the Small Claims Court. A volunteer can attend the hearing with you, provide moral support, and explain procedure.

The LICM hosts its Know Your Rights campaign several times a year, where volunteers table across campus to share information with students about their rights as students, tenants, and employees.

Court Accompaniment

The LICM offers a court accompaniment program that aims to increase access to justice for marginalized groups and provide support to clients involved in the court system. Our student volunteers can accompany you to the Administrative Housing Tribunal and Small Claims Court. Volunteers cannot act as your lawyer or representative, however they can prepare with you ahead of your hearing, accompany you to court, provide moral support and explain procedures.

You must have a hearing date scheduled at the Administrative Housing Tribunal or Small Claims Court in order to access the court accompaniment service.

Just Info

The LICM offers free legal information sessions to student groups and community organizations through the Just Info program. The LICM can provide presentations in almost all areas of Quebec law, including landlord/tenant law, employment law and family law, among many others. Presentations may be given in English or French, and are tailored to meet the specific needs of the audience.

The goal of Just Info sessions is to make the law more accessible by informing participants of their rights and obligations in a simple and useful manner. We also aim to develop the audience’s legal reflexes in order to empower its members to prevent future problems and to know how to react when legal problems arise.

Presentations are prepared and presented by law students. Please note that the sessions offer basic legal information and not specialized answers to particular questions. Our volunteers are not able to provide any legal advice.

Please note that sessions cannot be offered during the months of December and April as students are writing their end of term exams.

If you are interested in participating in the program, simply take a few seconds to fill out our Request Form below.

If you have any questions concerning the Just Info program, feel free to get in touch with us.
